About the artist:

Shandor Hassan is a New York based photographer – artist, and faculty member of the International Center of Photography in New York City, he is currently living and working in Budapest Hungary on a Fulbright scholarship in photography. He is affiliated with the Mai Mano Haz/Hungarian house of Photography.

SHANDOR HASSAN – HUNGARIAN FOLK FUNK

Shandor Hassan’s installation at Chinese Characters HUNGARIAN FOLK FUNK is a multi media installation of found objects assemblages, constructions and photographic works that are mined from the Budapest landscape and histories. Fusing physical and psychological terrain his work references the material transformations and entropic manifestations in urban space, and addresses the issues and collisions of the primal and the technological in a time of spiritual flux.

“I ran into Shandor early last summer when he showed me some photographs he had taken and exhibited in New York. Strangely, he neglected to tell me that he also made installations of found objects, folk objects in decay, carefully reclaimed materials complete with dirt, grime, dust and rust. This was more and more of interest to me since Chinese Characters benefits from showing interactive pieces and processes as well as more conventional fine art.

Shandor is also a designer and builder, and his work plays on the deconstruction of the idea of community, themes of contemporary folk which reference traditions and histories we think we know well but seldom question.”

A HUNGARIAN FOLK FUNK budapesti tájképekből és történetekből előásott tárgy-assemblage-okból,-építményekből és fotómunkákból álló multimédia-installáció. Munkáiban a fizika és pszichológia világát egyesítve a városi térben zajló anyagátalakulási és entropikus jelenségeket dolgoz fel, az “eredeti” és a “technológiai” problémáját, összeütközéseit vizsgálja.

“Mikor tavaly nyáron összefutottam Shandorral, megmutatta néhány New Yorkban kiállított fotóját. Fura módon nem is említette akkor, hogy talált dolgokból – nagy gonddal “visszaszerzett”, a rozsdától és a piszoktól teljessé váló, lepusztult folktárgyakból – is készített installációkat. Egyre inkább felkeltette érdeklődésemet, hiszen a Chinese Charactersben – a “hagyományos” képzőművészeti munkák mellett – előszeretettel fogadunk be interaktív alkotásokat.

Shandor egyszerre tervez és épít is, munkái a közösség fogalmának feltárásával játszanak, “köztudott”, ám valójában alig ismert hagyományokra és történetekre visszanyúló kortárs-folk témák mentén.” /T-Green/
